I know that someone 'owns' the code that is used to create Arctic, but I think it would be a neat idea to "Open Source" the code that is used to run the engine of Arctic.
In this we could include a number of features:
1. Base zones, ones that are well known and understood by the general population (do not have to Open Source the elite zones, that would make them less elite).
2. Current races and classes.
3. Sample characters
There are a few of reasons to do this.
1. People would set up mirrors of arctic, and potentially create their own zones, which, if they are good enough, could be imported into Arctic.
2. If the Arctic server is ever permanently shut down, the loyal fan base could continue to play, either on other public servers, or on their own computers.
3. We would have a larger pool of people to fix bugs in the code.
Any comments?

Not going to happen anytime
Not going to happen anytime soon. There are myriad reasons why it wont happen which I will not go into, they should be pretty obvious.
I will offer this though, Scrappinak and I have talked about what will happen if the game ever closes for good and one of the things will be to package the code up so anyone who wants can download it. The zones might be released as well, but that would take a discussion with a larger group of people which wont happen until it is necessary.
For now, there are no plans to close the game or distribute the code. Believe me when I say knowing exactly how everything in the game works makes it a lot less fun to play. Ignorance sometimes really is bliss.
Well I understand completely
Well I understand completely your reasons for not releasing the code, fair enough.
I am also pleased that you are willing to let people download the code should the Arctic server ever be shut down permanently. I'll definitely download the code in that case.
As for the zones being released, I can imagine reasons why that might not happen as well, however I hope that as many creators as are willing will release their zones to the public (in the case that the mud server is closed).
Thanks for letting me know.

Despite having a shrinking
Despite having a shrinking playerbase, Arctic is still my favorite MUD of all time. I've played plenty of the others who 'rank' higher, and not one comes even close. I also actively play Gemstone and Dragonrealms, yet both times I find I cancel my account now and then to enjoy some Arctic.
I'm against open-sourcing it, mostly due to the fact there'd instantly be a half dozen instances of the game in some form or another. If the current staff decide to close it in the future, then release the code.. but never give up a good thing without a fight.
Thanks.

Maybe there is a very old
Maybe there is a very old version of Arctic floating around? One where I couldn't get any current, useful game info? The reason I am asking is that I am playing with a Flash telnet client, and I'm using CircleMud as my test telnet server, but it is missing a lot of the commands I find familiar (opt ansi being an important one - how do I set my mud as color so I can confirm that any ANSI color coding I use works!).
I've got the client working on localhost, but it is very simple (just the basic example provided with the Adobe Flex toolkit) and needs a lot of work to be turned into a useful mud client.

I'm not quite sure my ATM card works, can I have your pin number so I can make sure it does?

Hahaha, very funny. If the
Hahaha, very funny.
If the version of the game is 10 years old, then the ANSI color codes will be the same, but almost all of the actual privileged zone information (keywords, spell effects) will be vastly different.
However I see your point. Maybe just the file/info for the ANSI color codes since that is what I am working on now? I've done some searching for what codes are typical for a telnet connection (the official protocol), but I want to confirm that these are what are used by Arctic.

There's a huge difference
There's a huge difference between Circle code and the code that Arctic runs on.
But since you're not familiar with google, your choices for color in most circle muds are;
Normal : NRM
Red : RED
Yellow : YEL
Green : GRN
Blue : BLU
Magenta: MAG
Cyan : CYN
White : WHT
Since the difference has been pointed out to you, do you think you can drop the pretense about wanting the code for a Circle adaptation, and simply admit you want Arctic2?

You really are cynical
You really are cynical aren't you?
I used Google, and the color codes you quote are completely wrong, they should be in the format shown by this page which is basically an escape character followed by a left square bracket, followed by a 1 or 2 digit number which indicates the color or format of the text (bold, etc...) and an m. Obviously what I am currently looking for is the current color chart used by Arctic but I suppose I can always examine one of logs and carefully map each ansi character to the appropriate hex color but that sounds like a waste of my time when I know this already defined somewhere in a file.
All I am doing is working a project for fun so I can learn the Flex 2 framework and here you are piling a bunch of crap on my lap. Your trash talk isn't welcome here, constructive feedback is.

I would hope as well that
I would hope as well that arctic will continue to be available. But a lot of arctic is it's zones. If anything, god forbid, should ever happen, hopefully the whole mud would be made available for someone else to put online somewhere.
