someone told me that darkness can magically cover 13 light sources. why is it that when i use darkness and one of the mobs has a light they can both "see" me and whup my scrawny dk behind.

They probably meant that that it could spread over about 13 rooms (if you assuming darkness spread out one room from you, and spreads out one more room from each of those in a cartesian grid, thats 13 total rooms) or that there's a hard limit of 13 lights it can overwhelm if you cast it 13 times (huge waste of a 13 heal cleric btw).
