ya'll need to work and not mud! hosers
java alternative
To resurrect an old thread..
Has any kind of new way to connect to the mud through a website been developed that isn't dependent on Java or the downloading of any additional stuff. I have a lot of opportunity to connect from random places but the computers at these places are always locked down and never have Java on them, thereby preventing me from connecting.
A lot of schools, I imagine, are probably very much the same way and it might be preventing new players from playing, as well.
windows has telnet
in the run menu or on the commandline type:
telnet mud.arctic.org 2700
Probably wont work
Even if you have java and run our connection applet you wont be able to connect to arctic cause, basically, what the applet does is, as scrappinak wrote, a direct telnet.
If the computer you are using goes to Internet through a proxy, you can use programs like Proxifier to make your connection to arctic through the proxy too (This wont work for all kind of proxies).
If the computer goes to Internet through a firewall which has several port numbers banned (2700 ie) is pretty hard to get a connection to arctic, HOWEVER, if you are lucky (again) maybe this firewall has port 8080 open, and, you can try connecting to arctic using this website:
http://www.mosha.net/01-telnet-gateway/telnet.shtml
Dunno how good is it...
And if you can install software, i think this is the panacea.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/telnetoverhttp/
Good Luck!

what I did
I found a silly, if somewhat amusing way of connecting to arctic on my campus. The windows labs have security that prevents running of any unsanctioned processes or applications. So I couldn't use telnet or any other mud client.
Heres the trick: my university has a unix lab as well. Every student has a unix account, so it is possible to connect to my unix account using ssh or whatever. I can then use the unix telnet to connect to arctic. Essentially I'm using my own unix account as a proxy. Since I'm on campus theres no link problems. The only downside is that I'm forced to use telnet instead of a better client.
Obviously this kind of thing is pretty dependent on what kind of computer environment you're using. I don't imagine this will be very useful for the majority of people.
Cheers,
Jim

how do i fix it?
It sounds like your
It sounds like your firewall. It's possible that Java.exe does not have permissions to connect to the internet and is being blocked.
Another possibility is that you may need to re-install Java. Check out www.java.com/download and see if there is a more recent version.
Neither of these has anything to do with this website though, I'd suggest sending your support questions elsewhere next time.
