I know Aristox says he reads EVERY post on the boards, but ... I'm cross-posting this to get it noted, by stox or whoever does web dev for mud.arctic.org

Rurh, unrestricted pkilling just means anyone can kill anyone. I know one of the muds on the top 10 list (Carrion Fields) restricts pk by only allowing players to kill people within 30% (above or below) of their total exp. However there's 10x more PK on that mud than on Arctic. It has half the active playerbase of Arctic but is consistently in the top 10, not because it's more fun than Arctic, which it isn't most of the time, but because more of their players vote, submit good reviews, etc. Their website has a easily visible buttons to vote at various sites and they just devoted a section to more links, to show people how to put those buttons on their own websites, to rate their mud, etc. http://www.carrionfields.com/Marketing.html They've had a recent surge of newbies because of this, 27 the other night. So really, Arctic's problem is not PK but poor advertisement.

Re:Marketing

1 week later, no response
should I take that as meaning no one cares?
or no one in any position of authoriteh read this?
or that it isnt realistic that we could "market" arctic better?
or what ...

Re:Marketing

5 days isn't a week, and maybe no one cares about your trash posts, you supposedly quit, why are you still here.

Re:Marketing

i meant a school/work week
and it's still important
no one cares whether YOU care or not, i sure as hell don't
i still have friends that play, and plan to come back next wipe
the post was aimed at adam or some other IMM / IMP

Re:Marketing

Marketing is really a double edged sword: if your mud is so damned fun, people would play it until they die, doing nothing else (including eating, sleeping, or utilizing the restroom). If it isn't, people will post reviews. A lot of efforts to bring Arctic up on marketing have failed as far as I can tell, seeing that Justinian's effort to have people voting was largely a failure (we see spurts of voting but people don't really vote often to make it count).

Getting some form of real marketing for Arctic beyond word of mouth would probably help out, but once has to realize that a lot of MUD's are facing heavy competition against graphical MMORPGs. Whiners that always talk about how crappy new changes are, or about how things could be more improved instead of just accepting how great 14 years (or whatever it is) of development is.

This is a mud. We like swords.

Re:Marketing

heres a thought... would arctic be half as fun as it is if there were x-thousand people on at any given time? i prefer the idea that everyone who plays does so because they enjoy the game, not because they saw it on "the to 10 muds" or whatever the hell.

Re:Marketing

That's true too Jordan, but at the same time there are people who are interested in pk-intensive mmorpg games and muds that have never heard of arctic and will never play it, with adequate advertising more people can at least try the game and see if it suits them.

Also, has anyone else noticed that all Siris does is heckle people on the forums lately, rather than actually add his opinion or something constructive? Siris, why do you even bother posting if what you say isn't worth reading?

Re:Marketing

just for the sake of whatever, i havent quit, altho i did delete all my chars when i said i did, but i'm another terrible liar about quitting for good, arctic is crack
i took a break from actually playing
i have since come back, to help newbie friends
and ended up titling a char, and am clanning soon
and no, not a evil trash randomer clan with uber leet skillz and spellz and shyneeeez
a neutral zoning clan

y'all have fun now, and maybe do the t-shirt thing again? if people pre-paid for the t-shirts, some profit could be made above and beyond cost of shirts, which could be spent on some advertising?
wouldnt have to be much, a week's worth of banner would bring in enough new people that word of mouth would do the rest

design would be easy on shirts as well, have a contest for design, let people on forums vote for the design, and give the winner a free shirt

i think its a good idea, hopefully someone besides siris sees it

Re:Marketing

I have to admit that I wouldn't mind seeing every starting town in Arctic filled with people, instead of only having 3 or 4 with a decent population. But what people have to understand is that we need a solid system in place for handling pvp and all of our class's need to be fleshed out a bit more to allow for more diverse character design. Its not just about advertising since all it takes is a few bad highlights for a new player to leave.

And yes I know that we will get a "few" new players who happen to LOVE pvp soo much that they don't mind being hunted by an entire clan. But the vast majority of gamers like to have a less chaotic gaming enviorment so that they can atleast feel as if they are really in the DL world where good and evil are constantly at war. in other words it doesn't do much for the "feel" of the game when towns that are supposed to be a haven for good, allow evil to walk its streets killing people.

Re:Marketing

I would pay for an arctic shirt if it went to supporting the community.

Re:Marketing

addendum to my tshirt idea
have it just before next wipe, so advert can be up during beginning of wipe
will be super crazy with so many people on, but ... relatively equal footing
in that total newbs wont get tent'd when they 5 man patience, or something

a few zones will be in/revamped, whatever, i hope
scouts should be more straightened out
and hopefully clan/pk system will be in
who knows, maybe even account system

so yea, ideally, a fundraiser type deally, for our current players who care, at end of this wipe
and bonus, it would be in the forums, and on game boards, etc, at beginning of wipe

ooh! ooh! maybe make it so like, if they had account system
and you bought a shirt
all your rollies would have instead of normal training armor, like
an arctic tshirt
same stats as training armor, but would be cool to have, other people would see, etc

i dunno, been up way too long,. mudded like 11 hours , and yea
time to catch some sleep

cool ... tshirts
(or hoodies, if people wanna pay, fall/winter is coming up for most players, sorry mates)

Re:Marketing

If they did tshirts there would have to be nothing directly fantasy oriented. Kind of like an inside joke thing, not like a bunch of muscle bound men and voluptous women in minimal leather. And don't put corey on the shirt.

Re:Marketing

we prolly couldnt have anything uber-dragonlance, without permisson
but we could have something big on the back
and on the front breast, have like, the startup ascii graphic

and yea bois, i said breast

are we done now?

moving on ...

some sort of design that would work for hoodie or shirt, same, yea

Re:Marketing

OK. NO TO THE STARTUP SCREEN. No one will buy that. You have to keep it simple. Maybe a little arctic in the little alligator spot. A golf shirt or some such would be nice.

not huge like, 8x6 ascii screenprint
but smaller, and sharper
just as a basic design concept

Re:Marketing

Re:Marketing

i'm not saying Izod. Lots of people wear polo shirts (by this we mean the collar and the 3-4 buttons right?). WEAR them we do.

Re:Marketing

Maybe Arctic should get some graphic designers and go Graphical.
Not elite graphics or anything... kinda like Zelda for SNES or
one of the many rpg's on SNES that is set up like FF5/6.
