Title: March 7th, 2013 -- Item Sets and You (a work in progress)
Post by: Hoss on March 08, 2013, 06:10:54 AM
Item sets: Item sets have been a thorn in my side for some time now. I have struggled with the fact that the player cannot see what bonuses are being granted and thus not exactly knowing if the set is overpowered, underpowered or just plain annoying. This wipe I will attempt to dial in item sets into a better place. To do this, I will need your help, feedback and daily random images of cats sent to Aristox daily.

To update you on what to expect right out of the gate, I have disabled a lot of item sets until I can better tune them (maintenance and difficulty to pop). I will be updating the forum posts to let you know when a new set is added or modified so that you can provide feedback.

The method to my madness; I am looking to have item sets fill the void of deep rented items, while giving rewards that are on par with the difficulty to obtain and maintenance of the set.

Thank you Hoss for the knowledge we appreciate it! Just out of curiosity, when you reference "Hard_Bash", is that a specific flag? or is it just a reference to the fact  that the item has bashmod on it (-1, -2, -5 etc), and if so can we know the specific number or is that too much info for mortal knowledge?

Really nice to see these being thrown out for all to see.  I think some sets really aren't worth getting like the woodsmans set.  So many pieces for for such low bonuses.  Maybe it can be like if you wear 2/3s of the set so that people can at least add something else to their char.  If you really look at its set bonus it's not really strong for a 12 piece set!

That's the bonus provided for the set

Remember each item have its own bonus, so for a 12 pieces set, potentially you have to add 12 possible bonuses....

This is really great.  I think it gives more people who have trouble getting elite items something to play for.  They can stay relevant and be strong!

Again, thanks for the hard work.

Good point!  But really 12 is a bit much.  And the rewards aren't something spectacular.  But then again woodsmans set IS from a relatively easy zone.

the quality of the set bonus is relative to how hard it is to get and the limits of the items and all that crap

12 piece set is a lot sure, but woodsmans set is like nearly no limit and soloable. if you expect no limit soloable stuff to be elite then you are stupid!

Keep in mind with woodsman's three of those items you can't wear at the same time:  Shirt, Vest, Armor are all on body.

When I reference HARD_BASH on an item set it is the bash_modifier that is added, and I do not want to display the exact number. The amount of bash_mod received would be proportional to the set quality.

So these sets are enabled? Seems like they are fairly in line. Woodsman's might seem like a lot going on but it frags easy, sometimes you can't reload 1 item, and then it becomes a pain in the butt and useless. The bonuses are good, but you won't be the best in your class while wearing that.

These are not designed to be "best in class", but to give more folks an opportunity to be better than average.  At least from where I see it.

Why wouldnt people deep rent entire sets then?  Or are you trying to say that sets are no_limit? Forgive my ignorance... but I haven't had sets in years ;)

I don't know about this.  I always liked the fact that Arctic had most of its mechanics/stats hidden from players.  You can sometimes figure it out (often with lots of work) or at least get a good guess; other times you can brown-nose other players who have put in the effort.  It added a layer of complexity and mystery that a text-based game needs IMHO.  Is this set better than that set?   Should I be using this spell or that one in this fight?  You were forced to make decisions based on your knowlege, not on the same spread sheet that everyone else has and thus making the exactly same choice as everyone else.  Less uncertainty/diversity --> game gets old faster.  The trend in Arctic seems to be being more transparent though....

Probably because a lot of people have the info anyway so why keep it from everyone else at this stage.

I think this gives extra incentive to go out and find these sets now. Hope to see more added to the list

Because stats are often changed, especially during a wipe.  Ppl had to figure them out again which, along with new zones and mechanics changes, helped a wipe stay interesting longer.

If I understand correctly these are now the ONLY item sets in the game? Looks like ivory set has lost the need for erudite's sword, but lost 2 int /wis as well. Woodsman's doesn't need the ring any more also.

You said you would need the playerbase's help, please clarify what help you need?

There is a thief specific set listed, as well as a couple non-class-specific sets that are usable by thief.
