question about "hint" in conclave test

I got a "hint" on my conclave test and then died.  Is this "hint" registered permanently on my character even though I started over after dying?

Also, is the reward for using no (or less) hints xp/coins? Or is it something bigger like stats?  I'm currently trying to figure out the 3rd test and about to lose it.

Edit: figured it out.  I got two XP bonuses, so it seems that the hint I got for my previously unsuccessful attempt "stuck" :)

The reward is the bonus experience (so not a big deal if you use the hint). I don't think it carries over if you die, only for the test session.
