Mages
« on: August 19, 2016, 08:44:11 AM »
I'm considering making a change, wondering on opinions. This is what I'm thinking about doing:
  • removing delayed blast fireball from white robes
  • removing shadow wrap from black robes
  • removing the newly added summoning circle from red robes
  • shifting around spells from the above's relevant books to consolidate the remainders onto 2 spell books
  • moving prismatic spray, blastwave and nightmare down a rung on the "hard to get list"
  • adding power word stun for all three robes from one main location, and also at a very low chance in the chaos ball book

This means all robed mages would get two area spells, however they would share the 9th slot. Black robe mages would clearly benefit the least as they already have a stun effect spell, but they're already overpowered so whatever. Thoughts?

This would be a game-changer. I love these ideas.

As a preferred white player, I have *tried* to make DBF do something of use: it simply doesn't.   Pris, on the other hand, is very much a "Are you a real mage?" type spell for Whites.   Less so for Reds, but reds have had an issue of being mostly assassins in PK and less useful in PvE for a long while.  Blacks.. well, they don't need love, but this will still be nice.

Please... as a mage player who doesn't get to see Cyan books, do this.  Even the playing field.

I like it a lot,  also like removing summon from mages.

I think to give regular people the chance for high area spells will do the game justice

Yes, please. Return the greatness of my adolecence, so I can dream of stunning again.

One suggestion:
Not sure if you can spell trap area spells.  If so, I'd suggest making PWS un-trappable if this is possible. A group of tethered cronies and guaranteed entry PWS would be pretty unfair.

@Thymorical: Perhaps if everyone in your group wasn't run by Oligo auto scripts, maybe they would be better at targeting. Just a thought.

Druids are going to have a hard time getting grouped if current 8-man max limits remain with these proposed changes. Even buffing lightning storm wouldn't make them take precedence over these mages.
Bear in mind that even in the golden era, less than a handful of mages had pws with prob 3x the current playerbase.
Also now you really empower low skill players and make them strong characters by simply having to spam a single spell.
Lastly, you give me only a week to write a proper stabbot to complement pws if your suggestions become reality.

I like all the ideas besides making nightmare, blast wave and prism easier to get. If I had it my way I would just go back to one Mage class and remove black, red, and white mages.

Removing summon from mages is in line with the class/lore/stereotypical view of a mage, istn't it? Since when does mages summon people anyway? :)
G00t plan yes me like.

Dug up some old pws logs for folks who get nostalgic. Apparently May-1999 was a busy month for pws.

I remember a wipe I actually got PWS and boy did some other players freak the hell out about it and throw a fit.   Point is I haven't been a fan of mages since it went away.  Glad to see it make a comeback.  Eddie is right, only a lucky few got that one.   Keep it that way, PWS can be hella powerful.

Power word stun for all robes would be a great change.

I love the idea of making the spells easier to get for sure.
I like the robes how they are.

Would you consider adding splintered mind back to white robes?

Splintered mind - in the short term no. I recall this was removed for a specific reason and given the time frames I don't have time to investigate.

I'll post consolidated changes tomorrow, PWS has been added for all robes. Summoning circle redacted from red along with DBF from white and shadow wrap from black.

I'm not sure what to do about the shadow wrap legendary rank. I guess for now I'll remove it, I don't think anyone will really miss it.
